Surrounded by family and love, William Howard Meldrum returned to his eternal home on August 19, 2022. He was born October 15, 1935, in Provo, Utah, to Dorothea Jane Pratt and William Howard Meldrum Sr., and is the great-great-grandson of Parley P. Pratt.
Howard’s parents separated when he was three years old and his mother married Wilford Hanson, who raised him as his own son. Howard loved and respected Wilford and always referred to him as his dad. Howard was the oldest of 13 children and was always the big brother.
Howard Sr. remarried, and young Howard was blessed with another brother.
Due to the nature of his dad’s, Wilford, work as an iron worker, Howard attended school in Washington, Oregon, California, Utah, and Arizona. While living in Southern Utah the family went to Short Creek to visit his aunt; While there Howard fell in love with the mountains, the place, the people, and wanted to be part of the community.
Howard married Mabel Zitting on July 5th, 1957, and shortly afterward was drafted into the Army. Following an Honorable Discharge, they made their way back to Short Creek to raise a family. Joy Barlow joined the family on March 6, 1971, and together they raised 26 children.
Howard was a gifted craftsman, owned several businesses throughout the years, and taught many young people trade skills, and good work ethics.
What he will be most remembered for is his beautiful voice and love for music. Howard built a recording studio with friends, sang in many groups, and loved singing with all friends and family. He will also be remembered for his compassion, kindness, friendship, patience, and charity. His character and actions were always above reproach. He lived by the motto of ‘Do What is Right because it Is Right’. He was a Prince of a Man.
He is preceded in death by his parents, five siblings, a daughter Jeanie Meldrum, grandsons Travis Hamilton, Kenny Meldrum, Clive Dutson, Mike Copeland, and James Dutson.
