Rosemary T. Speight

After 98 years of a very active life, Mrs. Rosemary T. Speight, peacefully passed into God’s loving arms on March 21, 2022 in Washington, Utah. Rosemary was born on May 15, 1923, in Tulsa, Oklahoma to Myrtle Lucille Bickford and William Maurice Hinchberger.
She was raised in Wilmington and Long Beach, California, attended St. Anthony Elementary School in Long Beach and Phineas Banning High School in Wilmington. Several years after high school she and her husband moved to Bakersfield where they raised two daughters, Randal and Candice Moore. Rosemary remarried in 1958 and she and her husband had another daughter, Jan Terry.
Rosemary worked for the County of Kern and continued working in civil service positions throughout her career with the Kern County Fire Department, Kern County Library, and the Kern County District Attorney Office when she retired in 1985.
Years after being widowed she attended her 55th high school reunion where she rekindled a relationship with Carroll Speight, a recently retired teacher and football coach at Paramount High School in Bellflower. She had known Carroll since elementary school. They married in 1986. Rosemary and Carroll enjoyed volunteering at the Veterans Hospital and St. Mary’s Medical Center, both in Long Beach. They loved traveling and saw much of the world. Rosemary’s claim to fame was, ‘I’ve fallen down in most of the major cities around the world.’ Carroll passed in 2008.
Rosemary was involved for many years with the Red Hat Society, Republican Women of San Marcos, Republican Women of Escondido, and the Boys and Girls Club of San Marcos where she was recognized as Volunteer of the Year. She recently became a member of the Washington County (Utah) Republican Women.
Her final year was spent at Ovation Sienna Hills, a senior retirement community, in Washington, Utah. She looked forward to playing Bridge, Bingo, LRC and taking advantage of every activity they offered. Rosemary was an excellent knitter throughout her whole life, she taught many friends how to knit, which she loved.
Rosemary is survived by her daughter Randal, husband Terry Wong, grandson Marc, and wife Mandy Wong residents of Ivins, Utah; daughter Candice, granddaughters Natalie, great granddaughter Taylor Marie, great grandson Trace Menees, and, granddaughter Michelle Zachery all of Bakersfield, CA; and, daughter Jan, husband James Bagdasar and granddaughter Claire, residents of Ivins, Utah; granddaughter Brooke, and husband Tom McElwee, of Alexandria, Virginia.
Graveside service will be held on April 9, 3:00 p.m., at Rose Hills Memorial Park in Whittier, CA.
