St. George, Utah- Rebecca Black, 71, passed away Monday, February 3, 2025. She was born August 25, 1953, at St Joseph's Hospital in Phoenix, Arizona to Larna Johnson and Leonard Black.
Rebecca was born in the turmoil of the 1953 raid from Short Creek, Arizona. Her mother and siblings were taken to Snowflake, Arizona where they lived until the government released them. Rebecca spent her early years in Kanab, Utah, and attended school there before returning to Short Creek. As a teenager, she worked as a seamstress at Barco in Hildale, Utah.
Rebecca married Mark Anthony Burnham on March 27, 1972, in Clark County, Nevada.
While raising a family of 11 children, Rebecca took classes from the American School, including psychology and science. She excelled at drawing and painting, a skill she passed on to many of her children. She was very protective of her children and made sure they were home by the time the streetlights turned on. She loved animals and always took great care if they were sick or injured. Rebecca always looked out for her kids and others, especially those with learning disabilities. After her own kids were grown, she volunteered to help care for special needs children and would often spend hours reading and attending to them.
Rebecca worked at the thrift store for many years and was known to bring home old treasures where she would work to restore them. She was very proud of her ability to fix things herself. Rebecca had strong moral values of kindness, truth, love, and charity and was resilient through great opposition and adversity.
Rebecca will be remembered for her care for animals, her kindness to others, her love for her children, and her devotion to her faith and God.
She is survived by her 11 children: Moroni, Sherrie Marie, Alicia Ann, Toni, Lydia Jean, Alma Lewis, Leonard Leroy, Mark Anthony Jr, Gwen, Becky Jo, and Kathleen Asenith as well as numerous grandchildren. She is preceded in death by Mark Burnham Sr. May 27, 1998.
