Marlene Lee Whitney, born on July 27, 1945, in Bossier City, Louisiana, passed away peacefully on October 28, 2024, in Hurricane, Utah. She was the beloved daughter of Willie James Whitney and Marguerite Kolb and the eldest of eight children, who will carry her memory forward.
Marlene is survived by her siblings: Alicia Brumfield (Greg), Bill Whitney (Sue), Jeanne Christensen (Val), Newell Whitney (Connie), Cina Guy (Floyd), Richard Whitney (Liz), and Delia Rotolo (Mark). She was a proud mother to four children, including her late son, "Little Ronnie" Rugg Jr., who preceded her in death on October 21, 1978. Her legacy continues through her children: Erinn Varela (Phillip), with grandchildren Taylor Rose Plank and Indigo Varela; Angelee Wagner, with grandchildren Darby, Eli, Ani Jo, and "Little Molly" Wagner; and her son Whitney Rugg.
Marlene's adventurous spirit shone brightly throughout her life. After her divorce from Ronnie Rugg, she embraced the challenges of single motherhood, leading her children on countless adventures, always accompanied by the family dog. A dedicated professional, Marlene earned her nursing degree and later graduated from BYU with a teaching degree. While raising her children, she worked full-time and attended night school to obtain her Master's degree, earning a reputation as a beloved teacher who made learning both engaging and fun.
Her love for animals was unwavering, and she cherished her many cats and dogs. Marlene also enjoyed yard sales (she got that from her mom) and loved to "collect" things (she got that from her dad). She went on many road trips too, especially to visit family back in Louisiana. Marlene was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and her faith was a cornerstone of her life. In her later years, Marlene filled the halls of her assisted living center with joy and humor, entertaining her friends with her colorful stories, which she would proudly embellish.
A graveside service will be held in Marlene's honor on Saturday, November 2, 2024, at 1:30 p.m. at the Toquerville Cemetery. 1200 Toquerville Blvd, Toquerville, Utah. All are welcome!
Marlene will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
