Joan Parkinson Hickman, 86, of St. George, Utah peacefully returned to her immortal home on a beautiful morning this Tuesday, June 7, 2022.
Joan was born in late summer of 1935 to George Arnold and Aretta Joseph Parkinson in their farmhouse in Beaver, Utah â€" a home that remained in her family until 2021 known as ‘Park’s Place.’ Growing up working on the family farm, Joan learned the value of hard work and perseverance which she would use throughout her life. After graduating Beaver High School in 1953, she married her high school sweetheart Harold R Hickman in the Salt Lake Temple, to whom she would remain married for the rest of her life and to eternity.
She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She was fiercely loyal, although her professional basketball allegiance occasionally shifted between the Phoenix Suns and the Utah Jazz, based largely on broadcast availability. She took great joy in family gatherings especially during holidays. Joan often anticipated those get-togethers and began planning for them before anyone else. One of her favorite sayings was ‘anything worth doing is worth overdoing.’
Joan was a determined woman, who valued education, hard work, and service to others. She was known for serving her neighbors, friends, and ward members through her multitude of callings. She made everyone feel welcomed and loved.
She was an avid reader with an insatiable desire to travelâ€" ultimately visiting destinations around the world with her husband and family. In 1996, she pursued a college degree and graduated Northern Arizona University with a General Education degree with an emphasis in history. Her love of the recorded past led her to create numerous book collections of family history that are cherished by her descendants.
Through it all, family was her focus and her greatest joy.
She is preceded into eternity by to her parents, her beloved son Gerald Todd (Jana) Hickman, siblings Arnold Foch (Nellie) Parkinson, Annabelle (John) Lister, Josephine (Ladell Willison) McBride, Myrl (Louis) Lessing, Itha (Hugh) Robinson, Roma (Albert) Koning, and Donna (James) Boyce.
She is survived by her husband Dr. Harold R Hickman, children Tracy (Laura) Hickman, Jana (Gerald) Hickman, Kimberly (Kerry) Kimzey, and Karilynne (Garrin) McGlinn, as well as her 15 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, June 11, 2022, at 10:00 am, with a viewing prior to the services from 8:30 am â€" 9:30 am, at Spilsbury Mortuary, 110 S Bluff Street, St. George, Utah. The interment will take place at Mountain View Cemetery in Beaver, Utah, following the services.
