Douglas Leonard Harline, Jr., age 79, passed away May 25, 2022, in St. George, Utah.
Doug was born on March 27, 1943, in Hermosa Beach, California, to Douglas Leonard Sr. and Joann Wilson Harline. Doug attended city schools, graduating from Valencia High School and California State University, Fullerton. He climbed the ranks of several notable California pool companies, and eventually owned his own pool construction company, Dana Pacific Pool and Spas, which he successfully operated for over thirty years. He was awarded several prestigious sales and design awards throughout his career.
Doug married Kathleen Deelstra, March 4, 1966, in a solemn ceremony in the Los Angeles Temple, of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Doug was a faithful and tireless servant in the church. He served as a counselor in bishoprics, seminary instructor, Gospel Doctrine teacher, temple coordinator and was a dedicated home teacher.
Doug was a gifted artist and vocalist, an expert historian, a talented tennis and basketball player, a prolific storyteller, and a die-hard Los Angeles Lakers fan. He had a profound love for all of the places of beauty along the California coast. He enjoyed planning road trips to national parks but loved the drive even more. When Doug was not working or spending time with his family, he could be found in his nautical-themed office cataloging family memories or napping in his time-worn La-Z-Boy recliner. His love for his children and grandchildren was only surpassed by the ardent love he had for his wife of 56 years, Kathy. He was a friend to all and had a story for every occasion. He will be sorely missed by his family and friends. In Chick Hearn’s words, “You can put this one in the refrigerator, the door’s closed, the lights are out, the eggs are cooling, the butter’s getting hard, and the Jell-O is jiggling.”
Doug is survived by his wife Kathleen Deelstra Harline, by sons and a daughter and their spouses: John and Lisa Harline; Greg and Kathleen Harline; Lisa Eads; Scott and Jenna Harline; grandchildren, Hayley Harline, Matthew Harline, Alexandra Eads, Bridgette Harline, Mason Harline, K.C. Eads, Noelle Eads, Maxwell Harline, Ella Harline, and Olivia Eads; a brother, Mike Harline (Marsha); and a sister, Sheree Harline McRae.
