Donald and his family found employment at the glass plant in Maywood, with the help of their family friend. Later, the family purchased a home in nearby Downey, California. After serving in the military, Donald met Viola ReNae Egbert, who also worked at the glass plant. They married on February 7, 1970, and were later blessed with two sons, Steven and Michael.

Donald had a fulfilling career at the Maywood Glass Company, where he worked alongside his brothers. He began as an apprentice in 1960 and retired at the age of 64. Donald was dedicated to his strong work ethic, made many friends and actively participated in the union, and rarely took a sick day.

A man of various interests, Donald found joy in supporting his favorite team, the Pittsburgh Steelers, often heard giving play advice through the television.
