David Stohl Summerhays

My beloved husband, father to our children, and grandpa to our grandchildren and great-grandchildren, passed away on August 23, 2023.

David was born on June 29, 1934, in Salt Lake City, Utah. His parents were Joshua Bennion Summerhays and Ruth Stohl Summerhays. Dave grew up in the East Salt Lake area and went to the local grade schools. He worked for many years with his father, uncles, and brothers, in the family business. Dave was proficient at all aspects of the wool pullery business. Upon graduation from East High School, he was awarded the Bausch + Lomb Science Award.

He attended the University of Utah for two years prior to serving a two-and-a-half-year mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, in the beautiful land of New Zealand. He returned to his studies at the University of Utah and graduated in 1961 with a degree in chemical engineering.

He met his future wife, Marion Madsen, on a blind date in November 1957. They were married on June 26, 1959, in the Salt Lake City Temple. After graduating from college, they moved to Rochester, New York, to work for Eastman Kodak Company for ten years.

In 1971, Kodak built a new plant in Windsor, Colorado. Marion and Dave took their family of six (Scott, Shari, Mark, and Gary) to Fort Collins, Colorado. He continued to work for Kodak in Windsor, Colorado, until he retired in 1991. They lived in Colorado for twenty-eight years.

In 1999, they moved to St. George, Utah, to enjoy the warmer weather. They enjoyed their beautiful home for twenty-three years. Dave enjoyed gardening, and especially attending to his roses. Marion and Dave enjoyed camping with family and friends until 2022. He also enjoyed his volunteer work for St. George LIVE driving the bus around St. George. He also served his whole life in various church callings. A memorable one was 1st counselor to the bishop in the Morningside 2nd ward. Dave was an avid golfer with the same group for many years while living in St. George. Dave and Marion have nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, whom they love dearly.
