Carolyn Yvonne James

March 2, 1937 — January 24, 2022

Our loving wife, mother, and grandmother, Carolyn Yvonne James, 84, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Monday, January 24, 2022, in Las Vegas, Nevada. Carolyn was born in Oakland, California on March 2, 1937, to Edward and Yvonne (Tribe) Phillips. She was the oldest of three children.

Carolyn grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area. As a child and teenager, she loved to dance and performed ballet, as her mother had done in her youth. She graduated from San Ramon Valley High School and then attended Brigham Young University where she studied Psychology and Interior Design. She married and was sealed for time and all eternity to John James on October 15, 1966, in the Oakland Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.

She had a career at Standard Oil in San Francisco before choosing to stay home to raise her two children. She also loved art, music, the performing arts, and fashion. She always made sure her children were dressed well, and she never left the house without make up and her hair done. Carolyn loved to plan trips and to travel. Some of her favorite places to visit were Carmel and Cambria, CA because they were easy to get to from where she lived. Also, she loved to travel to other states and countries including: Oregon, Washington, Alaska, Colorado, Florida, Hawaii, British Columbia, Alberta, Europe, and the Caribbean. She often visited England as her husband was from there, as well as her ancestors. She loved visiting historical sites and learning about her family history. Carolyn and her husband also loved building their homes. Some were track homes and some were designed by them. In total they built about 12 homes together. They lived in a lot of places in CA including San Francisco, Pacifica, Danville, Alamo, Walnut Creek, Pleasant Hill, and Bountiful, UT, Henderson, NV and St. George, UT.

She served in many callings in her church, including as a Young Women’s leader and Primary teacher as well as serving nearly ten years at the Oakland Temple.

Carolyn is survived by her loving husband of 55 years, John James of St. George, UT and Henderson, NV; daughter, Yvonne Hardy (Joe) of Boulder City, NV; her son, Jonathan James (Kim) of Henderson, NV; eight grandchildren; brother James Phillips (Adele) of Lincoln, California; and brother Keith Phillips (Sharon) of Star, Idaho. She was preceded in death by her parents.
