Carolyn J Atkin

Our beloved wife, mother, and grandmother, Carolyn Jones Atkin, age 75, passed away peacefully on September 16, 2024, due to complications arising from pancreatic cancer surgery. Carolyn was born on July 13, 1949, in Cedar City, Utah, to Richard Forsyth Jones and Elaine Holt Jones. She was the third child, joining her older brothers, Richard Mason Jones and Steven Holt Jones. They enjoyed a loving and happy home, which would serve as her foundation for the rest of her life.

Carolyn was raised on a ranch outside of Enterprise, Utah. Her mother was a resourceful homemaker, and her father and brothers raised sheep and cattle and grew alfalfa and other feed. Carolyn attended school in Enterprise, Utah. Following high school graduation, she moved to Salt Lake City, Utah, and attended Stevens-Henager College. Following college graduation, she worked as a legal assistant at the law firm of VanCott Bagley Cornwall and McCarthy. Carolyn was introduced to her future husband, Jerry Clayton Atkin, at a wedding reception. They were married in the St. George temple in June of 1971 and made their first home together in Salt Lake City. In 1974, they moved to St. George, Utah, where they eventually welcomed four children, Angela, Daron, Ryan, and Gregory, into their family.

Our mother cherished motherhood and spent countless hours investing in her children’s well-being and many activities. Her home was always clean and meticulously organized, and she enjoyed making beautiful spaces. She made homemade bread, cooked delicious meals, baked the best marshmallow chocolate brownies, and always had lots of treats around. All of the gifts that she gave were exquisitely wrapped, so much that the wrapping was a gift in itself.

The light of Carolyn’s life were her nine grandchildren who called her “Mimi.” She especially loved them as newborn babies, kissing the backs of their necks and rocking them to sleep. She enjoyed doing their hair, teaching them how to make sugar cookies and sew, and reading them bedtime books. She also started many Sunday family dinners with her grandchildren with a lesson from her book on good manners.

Our mother was beautiful, elegant, hard-working, disciplined, loving, and had a calming presence to those around her. She loved Enya, See’s chocolates, coconut anything, watching movies with a bowl of popcorn and frozen junior mints, taking morning walks with her best friend, burning candles in her home, clean hands, retail therapy, family trips, and family parties.

Carolyn was profoundly spiritual. She was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and had unwavering faith in God’s plan. Always a mom, she regularly shared talks and spiritual thoughts with her family, helping us “course correct” on many occasions. She exhibited compassion in many ways throughout her lifetime, as evidenced in the devoted care of her parents in their later years. She believed that challenges refined us and lessons unlearned would return.

Her faith made her brave and resilient as she fought three different types of cancer in her lifetime, always with an optimistic outlook. She rarely complained of her discomforts.

Our mother was the soul of our family and her presence here will be missed every day.

Carolyn is survived by her husband, Jerry Clayton Atkin, and her children Angela Elizabeth Atkin (Mark Lindsey), Daron Richard Atkin (Melissa), Ryan Clayton Atkin (Danielle), and Gregory Thomas Atkin (ReGina). She loved her son-in-law and daughters-in-law as her own. She is also survived by nine grandchildren, Jesse, Jace, Brooke, Nicholas, Noah, Benjamin, Annabelle, Alessandra, and Gabriella Atkin, and her two brothers, Mason and Steven Jones. She was predeceased by her father and mother.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, September 23, 2024, at 11:00 am at the LDS chapel located at 1762 S. River Road, St. George, Utah. A viewing will be held at the Spilsbury Mortuary, 110 S. Bluff Street, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 22, 2024, and again from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the River Road chapel. Burial will be in the Tonaquint Cemetery in St. George.

Our family will be forever grateful for the competent and tender care that our mother received from many doctors and nurses at the Huntsman Cancer Hospital and the University of Utah Hospital.

Arrangements are made under the direction of Spilsbury Mortuary. 110 South Bluff Street, St. George, Utah. 435-673-2454.
