August Belmont V passed away peacefully at his home in Saint George, Utah on August 31, 2023, at the age of 83. He was born on September 3, 1939, in New York City, New York, to August Belmont IV and Elizabeth Saltonstall. He grew up in Santa Barbara, California and attended St Mark’s School (Southborough, MA) and Harvard (BA ’61, MBA ’63). He worked in corporate banking for thirty years at Security Pacific Bank and Bank of America.
His great passion was flying which he began at age 17. He accumulated over 4,000 hours flying a variety of light aircraft including his beloved 1939 Piper J-3 Cub and set a world speed record for light planes with his Citabria 7ECA (Key West, FL to Cancun, Mexico).
He is survived by his wife, Gita, his children August VI, William Perry, Jane (Peutet), Blake Traister and Bryce Traister, and his many grandchildren he adored. He is also survived by his twin, John, whom he had a unique relationship with, and other siblings Richard Tower, Danny Winston, and Lee Alexander. He is preceded in death by sisters Alice Fisher and Priscilla Upton.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am, Saturday, September 16, 2023, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints meetinghouse on 1483 Angel Arch Drive, Saint George, Utah, 84790.
