Jack "Turk" Everett Holt

January 24, 1929 — January 30, 2023

Jack Everett Holt (Turk), age 94, passed away peacefully at his home on January 30, 2023. He was born on January 24, 1929, in St. George, Utah to James LeRoy and Violet Gleave Holt. He was the youngest of 4 children and spent his entire life in St. George which he dearly loved.

His adventures as a young man earned him a string of nicknames, each with an intriguing story behind it, which he loved to tell to anyone who would listen. He attended Dixie High School.
As a teenager he started working in the small family grocery store known as The Dixie Market.
He met Mabel Wilcock at a dance in St. George and they were married April 12, 1952, in the St. George Temple. They had 3 children: Valerie, Ken, and Diane.

Jack and his family built the Twin Oaks Motel which was on the west end of St. George Boulevard. He and Mabel ran the motel for many years until they sold it in 1968.
Jack also worked in construction for many years as the owner of Holt Drywall, built many homes throughout Washington County and built and operated the Idle Hour Apartments. He was always a hard worker, but he loved spending his free time hunting and fishing. He always talked his buddies into going with him, and he cherished those friendships. Jack and his friends loved to congregate at one of the local restaurants early in the mornings to tell tall tales, tease each other and try to one-up each other in practical jokes. He loved to make up stories and could tell the most outlandish ones with a straight face. Over the years, those stories have become family “legends.” In his later years, he loved walking the dog around town and many people could easily recognize him by the hunter orange hat he wore year-round.

Jack was preceded in death by his parents, older siblings Gleave, Leo and Ila (Hackwell). He is survived by his wife, Mabel; children Valerie (Neal) Pack, Ken Holt, Diane (Jerry) Amundsen; and 22 grandchildren and great grandchildren.

The family would like to thank Dixie Hospice, especially Salli Kae, Cody and Becky for their dedication and loving care they gave Jack throughout the last year. Special thanks also to the care given by Charissa.
