[Return to Obituaries]
Donna May Hanks Gardner passed away on May 19, 2012.  She was born May 22, 1922 to George William Hanks and Zina Elizabeth Stone in Burley, Idaho.  She married Samuel Vernon Gardner in the Salt Lake City Temple on September 4, 1940.

She is survived by two sons: Douglas Vernon ( Joan) of Orem, Utah, and Scott Ellis ( Terrel) of Saratoga Springs, Utah, 8 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.  She is preceded in death by her parents and all of her siblings, her husband, a beloved daughter, Deborah June, and 3 grandchildren.

Donna’s life was one of giving and devoted service to her family and fellow man.  She enjoyed conversation and would discuss almost anything with pretty much anyone just about anytime.  She was simply a fun person to be around .  She had an unbelievable sense of humor and loved to “kid around”. When the joke was on her she enjoyed it all the more.  She never took herself too seriously.  She touched the lives of many and was loved by all who knew her.

Donna was a dedicated member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and held many positions of responsibility in teaching, planning, compassionate service, leadership, missionary and temple work.  For many years she and Sam served as temple workers in the Seattle Washington, Portland Oregon and St. George temples.  The last nine years of her life she has served as a missionary in the Member Location Mission and has loved it.

Special thanks is given to Bishop Bracken and members of the St. George 4th Ward for their visits, concerns and many kindnesses during Mom’s brief illness.   And finally, a special, tender thanks is given to her beloved friend, Ray Andersen, and his lovely family for their love and devotion to our mother.   There is a very special place in heaven for people like this.  Thank you Ray.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, May 23, 2012 at 11: 00 a.m. at the St. George 4th Ward chapel, 449 South 300 East, St. George.     A viewing will be held May 22, 2012 ( her  90th Birthday), at the Spilsbury Mortuary 110 South Bluff Street,  St George, and Wednesday prior to the services from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at the chapel.
